1 Samuel 16:7 (CSB)
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him.
Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.”

Begin with Prayer
Lord, help me see like You see. Help me love what You love. Help me stop chasing what looks impressive.
Observation
Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13,
then reread verse 7 slowly.
- Who is talking, and who is being corrected?
- Little kids: Who is talking right now?
- Everyone: Who is God correcting?
- What exactly does God tell Samuel not to look at?
- Little kids: What should Samuel NOT stare at on the outside?
- Older kids and adults: What two outside things are named in the verse?
- What are the two “ways of seeing” contrasted in the verse?
- Humans see ________
- The Lord sees ________
- Little kids: People look at the outside. God looks at the ______
- What does the word “visible” include in real life. List a few examples?
- Little kids: What are things we can see with our eyes (hair, clothes, muscles, height, smile)?
- Older kids and adults: What “visible” things do we use to decide “they’re impressive”?
- What does the verse say happened already to this candidate?
- “I have ________ him.”
- Little kids: God already said “no” to him. What word shows that?
- “I have ________ him.”
Family-friendly commentary
Samuel is doing what people do. He is impressed by what he can see. God stops him and says, “That’s not how I choose.” God already knows the truth about this man.
Interpretation
What does the text mean to the original reader?
- Why is this correction important in the story right now?
- Little kids: Why does Samuel need help choosing the right king?
- Everyone: What would go wrong if Samuel chose by looks?
- In this context, what does “heart” most likely mean?
(Inner real stuff. Motives, what you love, trust, humility, willingness to obey)- Little kids: The “heart” here is not the pump in your chest. It’s the inside-you. What are some inside things (love, honesty, courage)?
- Does the verse mean externals are meaningless, or that they are unreliable as spiritual proof?
- Little kids: Do looks tell the whole truth about a person (yes or no)?
- Older kids and adults: What’s the difference between “doesn’t matter” and “can’t prove”?
- How does this connect to Saul’s failure. What “visible” qualities did Saul have, and what heart-level issues did he show?
- Little kids: Saul looked like a king on the outside, but what went wrong on the inside (did he obey God or not)?
- Older kids and adults: Name one “outside” strength and one “inside” problem we see in Saul
- What principle about leadership and God’s choice is being taught here?
- Little kids: God wants a leader who loves who on the inside?
- Older kids and adults: Write the principle in one sentence
Family-Friendly Commentary
This is not “pretty people bad.” David is described as attractive later. The point is the measuring stick. People over-trust what looks good. God checks what’s real.
Application
What does the text apply to me?
- Where do I judge quickly based on what is visible?
(Church, parenting, friendships, social media, myself)- Little kids: When do you decide “I like them” or “I don’t like them” really fast
- What visible signals do I personally overvalue?
(Confidence, platform, eloquence, charisma, productivity, appearance, education)- Little kids: What outside thing makes you think someone is “cool” ?
- Older kids and adults: Which of the list traps you most?
- Where am I tempted to perform “visible spirituality” rather than pursue heart integrity?
- Little kids: Do you ever try to look good on the outside while your inside feels yucky?
- Older kids and adults: Where do you chase “looking holy” more than being honest with God?
- What would it look like to practice God’s kind of seeing this week?
(Example: ask character questions, slow down evaluations, notice quiet faithfulness)- Little kids: One way to “see like God” is to ask, “Are they kind” What’s one question we can ask?
- Older kids and adults: Name one practice you’ll do this week
- One heart-level thing to bring to God honestly right now?
(A motive, fear, jealousy, need for approval, resentment)- Little kids: Tell God one true feeling you have right now (happy, sad, mad, scared)?
- Older kids and adults: Name the real heart thing underneath your actions
Family-Friendly Commentary
This verse comforts and confronts. Comfort, God is not fooled by polish. Confront, we can’t hide behind polish. God sees the heart means God sees your heart.

Two Common Misreads to Avoid
Misread 1: God doesn’t care what I do outwardly.
God cares about obedience. This verse says looks are not the way God measures worth or calling.
Misread 2: My heart is sincere so I’m fine.
Our hearts can trick us. We don’t “trust our hearts.” We bring our hearts to God so He can shape them.
People grade the outside.
God checks what’s real inside.
Discussion
What outside thing do I mistake for ‘spiritual maturity’ and what real evidence would matter more?
