Pull up a seat on the couch. This is where family, faith, and Scripture come together as we grow in our love for Jesus.

If you've ever asked "what did you learn at VBS to

If you've ever asked "what did you learn at VBS today?" and gotten a shrug, these three questions are for you.

I wasn't trying to test what my 5-year-old remembered. I just wanted to understand what she was learning.

If your kid comes home singing but can't tell you what the songs were about, that's completely normal. The melody sticks before the meaning does.

Listening ahead of time gave us something concrete to talk about, and made VBS feel familiar to her before she even walked in the door.

I wasn't trying to recreate the whole curriculum at home because well... I don't have time for that, and neither do you. 🤭 I just wanted to know the language she was hearing, so I'd recognize it when it came up in conversation.

This question was intentionally easy. She didn't have to summarize the whole day, just tell me what she liked. Starting small is what got the conversation moving.

This is where I had to fight the urge to correct her. I wanted to hear what "God is our safe place" meant in her own five-year-old words, even if the explanation was still taking shape.

Understanding a truth is one step, but it's not the whole thing. This question helped us move toward what trusting God might actually look like in her ordinary, everyday life.

I wasn't looking for polished theological answers (I don't have them either, most days). I wanted faith to feel like something we could just talk about at home, something she could ask about, wrestle with, and put into her own words.

On the last day of VBS, right here on this couch, she told us she wanted Jesus to forgive her and be the boss of her life.

We slowed down. We listened. We asked a few gentle questions about what she understood, and then we prayed with her.

These questions weren't a formula, and they didn't create this moment. They just gave her room to say out loud what we believe the Holy Spirit was already doing in her heart.

Paise God for VBS! 🙌❤️

I used to think interrupted Bible study meant I had failed.

If I did not wake up before my kids and read my Bible alone, in complete silence, I felt guilty for the rest of the day.

Eventually, I made progress.

I learned to read while my kids played nearby. It was not quiet, but I was still in the Word.

Then I noticed another problem.

I could tolerate their noise, but I still became impatient when they actually needed something from me.

Today, I was reading Psalms when Lizzie told me she was hungry.

And I felt it 😖

That immediate resistance to stopping. The frustration of an unwanted transition. My desire to protect the morning I had planned.

But I took a breath and asked, “Do you want to go get donuts?”

She squealed. 😆

We got into the car, and she asked to listen to “Oh God, oh God, I need You,” which is what she calls “Same God” by Elevation Worship.

So there we were, driving to get donuts and worshiping together. 🙌🙏

When we came home, I picked up where I had left off in Psalms with a donut in hand. 🍩

I realized this was another kind of progress.

I didn't abandon spiritual disciplines because of an interruption. I learned that my preferred conditions are not God’s commands.

I did not have to choose between loving my daughter and spending time in Scripture.

I could lay down my plan, enjoy the moment with her, and come back.

My Bible study was interrupted.
My discipleship wasn’t ❤️

Maybe your Bible has been sitting beside your bed,

Maybe your Bible has been sitting beside your bed, patiently waiting for you to become the sort of person who wakes before the sun, lights a candle, and owns three coordinating highlighters.

Instead, you open it at 10:47 p.m., read four sentences, and wake up with your face resting somewhere in Numbers.

You meant to read it... Truly.

But one missed day became several. Then the guilt of not reading made opening it feel strangely heavier, as though the Bible itself might ask where you have been.

Psalm 119:105 calls God’s Word a lamp to our feet. A lamp does not illuminate the entire road. It gives enough light for the next step.

Progress may look like one paragraph while the coffee brews ☕
It may look like opening the Bible app before Instagram 📱
It may look like returning after a long absence without delivering yourself a disappointed sermon first 🫂

You do not need a perfect streak, an elaborate system, or the stamina of a minor prophet.

Open it 📔 Read a little 📖
Notice one thing about God 🔍

The Bible can become less of a reminder of what you have not done and more of a place where you meet the God who is glad you came ❤️

What usually gets in the way?
Is it exhaustion, distraction, intimidation, or guilt?

I finished my first seminary course this summer

The course was called Biblical Spirituality, which can sound like a broad phrase, but the focus was deeply practical: prayer, Bible intake, evangelism, fasting, and the spiritual disciplines that form the Christian life.

I expected to learn about those disciplines.

What I did not expect was how much I would be required to actually practice them.

Most courses encourage application; this one demanded it. And God used that discipline to disciple me in a way I had not experienced before. I am deeply grateful for the closeness with Him that came from it.

There is so much I want to share with other parents who desire closeness with God, both for themselves and for their children.

But for now, I am resting in the release of pressure that comes with finishing schoolwork and in the comfort of being home after two weeks of adventure.

Up Next is Intro to Hermeneutics, and I am genuinely excited. One of my assignments will be creating a multi-week Bible study over a book of the Bible. I will need to interpret that book in light of its historical and literary context, redemptive history, and make faithful application for a modern audience.

So I’m curious 💭

If you could choose the book of the Bible for a multi-week study, which one would you choose?
